VoIP for Business - Great Advantages

VoIP, otherwise known as Voice Over Internet Protocol, is a brand new type of technology that allows users to use the Internet to make phone calls. Because of its unique features, VoIP enables people to make phone calls without the typical phone charges. This can be highly beneficial to companies and individuals alike. Let's take a closer look at Voip.

One of the most appealing advantages of VoIP, over the traditional landline phone service, is that it provides lower costs. VoIP is able to do this since they are not regulated by the FCC and are not required to pay the taxes common to traditional phone companies. VoIP passes these savings onto their customers. Most VoIP providers offer low cost unlimited monthly calling plans. A business can call long distance during peak hours and avoid the expenses associated with traditional phone service. There may be extra fees for international calls, but they are cheaper than the traditional phone company. This will result in substantial savings on the phone bill over the course of a year. Extra services such as caller id and call forwarding are also often included at no additional charge.

VoIP is portable and flexible. With VoIP, data and voice are integrated and do not require separate networks. Sometimes there is a lot of movement in companies resulting in a great deal of work and hassles. With VoIP, if an employee moves, it can now be as easy and quick as simply plugging the IP phone into a different broadband network jack. Also, telecommuting becomes simple and viable. If you need to stay home for the day, you can still be a productive employee. There is also the advantage of having messages sent to email. Now the employee doesn't have to retrieve their messages from voice mail. In fact, you can even get faxes with email. All your messages are now organized in one place.

Mobility is another key advantage to VoIP. You can keep your area code from anywhere in the world. This eliminates international rates. You can be reached in Australia, using your Texas area code. It will be as if you were making the phone call from your very own office. If you are going to be away for a while, you can see how the savings begin to add up. Virtual phone numbers keep your calls at home, even though you may not be there. Your phone system can go anywhere with you with a simple access to a broadband connection. In addition, you can use your laptop to send and receive messages with a simple microphone and headphone connection.

There are some problems with VoIP since it is still in its growing stages, but these are expected to be resolved in time. The benefits result in lower costs and increased productivity. These are what every business strives for. If this sounds like an attractive outcome for your business then climb aboard the VoIP bandwagon and allow your company to attain its business goals.

Data Recovery - What Not to Do!
Data recovery is a tricky thing, and if you've somehow deleted or had your important files corrupted or lost due to human error, business espionage, faulty hardware or software or any other reason; the good news is that your lost data is probably recoverable. This article will show you a few things NOT to do when an event such as this occurs.
Don't run the drive anymore, or use the device. (MP3, portable storage, camera card, whatever) If you think it won't hurt to even just poke around the internet for a solution to this mess you've made/found, you're wrong! Don't install or run anything on the drive you hope to recover data from. Only access this drive again from a healthy PC with the software solution you're going to use. Since files are overwritten in the order they've been deleted, the last files that have been excised from your drive will be the first to be lost permanently. Even just surfing, with all the cookies and temporary internet files that are always being generated will often doom the process without you even knowing about it.
Don't use tools that may reside on your computer, such as Scandisk, or a boot record utility, as these will probably overwrite exactly the files you're seeking to get back.
In short, be careful! Your data may very well be recoverable, as long as you don't do something to erase it forever! Find a good data recovery software solution, and then follow the instructions to the letter, and you'll more than likely live to see your lost data return!
Keith Thompson is the webmaster at Data Recovery Service a site cenetered around helping you get back your lost data!

Google Voice vs. Response Point with ITSP

VS.

I will admit, this is a bit of a silly comparison but the truth is that I have had a few customers (and some analysts) asking for some clarification on the new Google Voice offer and how it may compete with Response Point when coupled with an ITSP. The fact is they really do not compete in any measurable way and they could easily compliment each other.

Major Differences

The obvious major difference is that Response Point is a small business phone system, Google Voice is really a service offering targeted at individuals.

When we combine Response Point with an ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider) we start seeing some similarities in the services between the two offers but they are really meant for 2 distinctly different purposes.

Response Point offers an actual premise-based system with a base unit, handsets and features like; auto-receptionist, DID integration, hunt groups, voice mail to email integration etc. All of the things one would expect when purchasing a small business phone system.

Google Voice service is an overlay service on whatever you have today, so if your existing phone system is simply not cutting it, it’s unlikely that Google Voice is going to be able to transform it into the system of your dreams. It’s true that Google Voice will allow you to take advantage of certain features but don’t expect to find a Park, Hold or Transfer or anything fancy like speech recognition.

Google Voice is an inbound-centric service. Most features can only be used with an inbound call, that includes call recording and call joining.

How they play nice together

One could use the Google Voice - simulring feature to call your Response Point phone number and at the same time it could call your mobile.

Google Voice - call recording is a handy feature that is currently not a feature offered in the Response Point system.

Google Voice - voice mail transcriptions is a handy way to receive visual voice mails via email and SMS.

Google Voice - call widgets allow users to put callback widgets on a website. This will allow the visitor to put in their phone number and the system will call them and then it will call your Google Voice number.

Google Voice - SMS is a cool way to compose, accept and manage text messages while maintaining control over the devices associated with that service.

Potential ‘Gotchas’

The Google Voice service is only available in the US. Even US subscribers can only forward/simring their Google Voice numbers to other US numbers but that is likely to change to include international countries in the near future.

In theory, the Google Voice call should go wherever the media is sent. Call Routing results may vary depending on the Response Point ITSP you choose.

When calling out, your existing phone number (Caller ID) will be presented to the callee unless you use the dial-out feature, which is (IMHO) a bit of a hassle. This causes some problems as most of us are used to calling people back on the number we last saw from them. Fortunately, many ITSPs (unlike the conventional phone companies) will allow you to change your Caller ID number to match your Google Voice number.

Google Voice does not address LNP (Local Number Portability) at all right now. Which means you can not bring your existing numbers to Google Voice, you have to choose a new number.

SIP Trunking and Hosted PBX in Canada will speed HD Voice for small business

SIP trunks are simply another way of saying VoIP Provider for your phone system. A SIP trunk is a connection from a PBX (phone system) using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to an ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider).

It might sound complicated but it’s really quite simple, SIP trunks take the place of your legacy telephone company. Most phone systems out there today are more than a couple of years old and are likely based on circuit switched technology. Newer IP-PBXs use packet switching technology, which means they leverage the Internet to deliver the same features you have now, and then some. The difference could be minor or major depending on what your PBX is capable of and what your ITSP can deliver in terms of features and functionality.

Since the PSTN (public switch telephone network) is tied to aging circuit switched technology it has limitations in terms of what media it can support. Essentially, it can deliver low quality voice, that’s it.

SIP Trunks replace older PRI and POTS interfaces that we are used to and bring to the table a wide variety of communications options. Depending on your IP-PBX and your ITSP you could potentially look forward to HD (High Defenition) Voice and potentially HD Video.

HD voice (and video) for small business in Canada will happen, it’s only a matter of time. As broadband providers increase upstream bandwidth and dual WAN link-failover devices become common place, SIP trunking will accellerate in growth and on-net (calls made on the ITSP network) HD Voice will become common place.

Unfortunately, HD communication off-net (eg. PSTN) is not going anywhere at any great speed. Jeff Pulver is back as he reboots the communications industry with his new HD Communication Summit. I welcome Jeff back with open arms, if anyone can convince operators to increase speed towards wide-band/HD adoption it would Jeff Pulver.

Today we can see SIP trunking providers and hosted pbx providers supporting wideband codecs and devices on their networks. This will allow user to communicate in high definition with other users that have devices that support it, in brief you could have better calls between you and your colleagues in the office and remote office workers connected to the same PBX, and that is a step in the right direction.

Google Talk,Make Free International Calls

Interested in placing free, international PC-to-phone calls via Google Talk? While Google Talk does not yet offer VoIP services like other IM clients, a free service called Gtalk-to-VoIP (utilizing Talkster) can make free international calls from your PC a reality.

While this service is a little more complex than dialing a telephone number, it is a great service for those who are not interested in PC-to-PC calling or paying for a PC-to-phone service.

To take advantage of free VoIP via Google Talk, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Talk IM client. If you do not have Google Talk, you can download it free on the Google Talk web site.
  2. Next, click the “Add” button as you would to add a contact on Google Talk.
  3. Next, type in your contact’s telephone number using the following format: telephone number@talkster.gtalk2voip.com. For example, if your friend’s number was 555-555-1212, it should appear as 15555551212@talkser.gtalk2voip.com.
  4. A confirmation will appear on Google Talk with a local telephone number for your contact to call. This number will be sent automatically by text message, however, you may also want to provide the number if the text is not received.
  5. To place your free telephone call, click on your contact’s telephone number on the Google Talk window and press “Call.”
  6. Talkster will dial the contact’s telephone number. Upon answering, instruct your contact to call their local telephone number provided by Talkster, then wait on the line as they hang up. Do not end the call. When your contact calls the local telephone number, the call will be reconnected for unlimited international talk.

Talkster offers local numbers in more than 30 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States.

How ZER01 Could Up end the Cellular Companys

ZER01 Communications attracted much attention recently when it announced a new nationwide unlimited mobile voice service for $69.95 per month, with no roaming fees, contracts, credit checks or commitment. The prepaid service also includes unlimited wireless data connectivity at no extra cost. The pricing alone, which is well below major carrier's unlimited plans for voice calling only, has the potential to shake up the U.S. cellular market. But the technical and business model underlying the service could turn the market on its head.

What makes ZER01 unique is that it uses only wireless data links to handsets, rather than cellular voice links. It relies on major GSM cellular carriers for those links and transports both voice and data over them, encoding the voice as IP packets. It puts client software on the handset, gives each handset its own IP address, and sets up a VPN (virtual private network) or encrypted data tunnel between the handset and its switches. Except for those "last mile" wireless connections, the service runs entirely over the company's own switching and backbone network infrastructure.

This approach makes ZER01 a true mobile VoIP carrier. Though some reports have described it as an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), ZER01 disputes the description. That term typically refers to companies simply selling under their own names a major carrier's mobile service running over the carrier's network. ZER01, by contrast, is selling its own service running entirely over its own network except for the wireless last mile.

CEO Ben Piilani explained the distinction in technical terms. "We're providing the data down to the end consumer," he said. "We're not using the carriers' data to carry [the voice] to the consumer. We're not reselling their data, we're sending our data using their GSM network."

ZER01's service uses technology developed by its parent company, Unified Technologies Group Inc. The accomplishment was not trivial. VoIP over the fixed Internet is challenging enough; mobile VoIP has to deal with the inconsistencies of wireless connections as well. These include significant potential for lag or delay, along with differences in throughput among the various types of services. The proof is in the results: ZER01 can deliver calls not just over GSM 3G data connections but also over slower links such as GPRS and EDGE. Piilani said the calls often sound better than with cellular voice services. The real proof, of course, will be users' verdicts once the service goes commercial.

The other radical aspect of ZER01's approach is its open network. The carrier doesn't subsidize handsets, and so will let any GSM device connect to and use its service. The client software is currently available only for Windows Mobile devices, but ZER01 is working on versions for Android, BREW, iPhone (jailbroken), Java, RIM and Symbian devices, Piilani said. Also remarkable is that the service includes truly unlimited data service for Web access, email or any other use. By contrast, cellular carriers' "unlimited" data plans, which involve hefty fees on top of the monthly voice charges, are not really unlimited because of so-called "acceptable use" policies, according to Piilani.

The new service could radically alter the U.S. mobile landscape in two ways. First, the low price is a direct result of the fact that VoIP is inherently cheaper than traditional voice services, wireless or otherwise. Thus even though ZER01 is paying cellular carriers for the wireless data links, it can still make money charging under $70 a month (with a one-time $30 activation fee), and even throw in unlimited international calling to 40 or so countries (to nonmobile numbers) for another $10 a month. Such economics will inevitably influence the major cellular carriers themselves to move toward offering their own VoIP-over-wireless-data services. It might eventually even persuade them to lower the price of their voice plans.

Second, ZER01's low rates make nonsubsidized handsets more attractive. The company is talking to mobile-phone manufacturers to try to get them to offer something close to wholesale prices for its customers. In general, phones should cost from $100 to $200 for low-end models up to $700 for high-end devices, Piilani said. Many users will find that the cheap calling makes paying for the phones themselves worth the expense. That too will disrupt the dominant cellular carriers' subsidized-handset business models, and perhaps convince them to move in the same direction themselves.

ZER01 will launch its service in beta at the CTIA Wireless show at the beginning of April. Commercial service is likely to begin a few months later.
